Playing less than max coins

The Royal Flush pays 250:1 at 1-4 coins but 800:1 at 5 coins (max bet). That jump adds about 1.5% to the RTP. Playing 1 coin on a 9/6 JoB drops your effective RTP from 99.54% to about 98%.

Fix

Always bet 5 coins. If 5 coins at $1 is too much, drop to a $0.25 machine and bet 5 coins there.

Breaking a winning hand chasing a Royal

Do not break a flush or straight for 3 to a Royal. The math only supports breaking for 4 to a Royal. A flush pays 6x now. Three to a Royal draws completes about 1 in 1,081 times. Keep the sure win.

Fix

Follow the strategy chart strictly. 4 to a Royal: yes, break almost anything. 3 to a Royal: only break a low pair or worse.

Holding a kicker with a pair

If you have a pair of Kings plus an Ace, discard 3 cards including the Ace. The kicker does nothing in video poker. You are not playing against other hands. Drawing 3 gives you more chances to hit trips, quads, or a full house.

Fix

Never hold a kicker. Two pair: hold both pairs, discard 1. One pair: hold the pair, discard 3.

Using a bonus for video poker play

Most casino bonuses count VP bets at 5-10% toward wagering requirements. A $500 bonus at 35x with 5% table contribution requires $350,000 in VP bets. At 99.54% RTP, you lose $1,610 trying to clear it. The bonus is worth negative money.
