As far as theme and graphics go, the slot attempts to capture the harrowing experience of hitting rock bottom through the lens of the 5 stages of grief - denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.

Visually it's classic Nolimit City - mostly monochromatic color scheme with occasional pops of color, seedy characters and a pervasive sense of gloom. The heavy metal soundtrack complements the grimy visuals nicely.

It's evident that gameplay has taken a backseat to aesthetics with this release. There are no wild symbols during base game play. Instead, you'll need to rely on the xSplit symbols or trigger one of the two free spins features to spice things up.

Having played nearly every Nolimit City slot out there, I couldn't wait to dive into their latest creatively disturbing entry, Rock Bottom. However, I emerged from the experience feeling underwhelmed.

Despite the impressively grim vibe, I found the gameplay itself rather tame and unengaging in the base game. The xSplit feature helps ramp up the number of ways to win, but with no regular wild symbols, the action feels quite flat without free spins in play.

Speaking of which, the dual free spins modes are the highlight of Rock Bottom gameplay-wise. As a veteran slot player, I had no issues getting my head around the mechanics but I can see it being potentially confusing for more casual players.

You're essentially trying to build up symbol win multipliers and collect scatters to progress to higher levels where more rewarding symbols become expanders. It adds a strategic element I can appreciate, though relying purely on character symbol hits can result in dead spins without any exponential wins.

In terms of winning potential, Rock Bottom is hampered by a max payout capped at 19,690x your total bet. That may seem highly impressive in isolation but feels low for a modern Nolimit City release. For context, their previous slot Serial offered over 70,000x top wins!

Ultimately, Rock Bottom is held back from greatness by being neither volatile nor rewarding enough to satisfy thrill-seeking players, while also lacking the accessibility for more casual slot fans. Nevertheless, Nolimit City deserve plaudits for their boundary-pushing creativity.

There are 5 distinct stages, each represented by a unique character symbol based on the 5 stages of grief. In Headshrinker spins, the symbol corresponding to the current stage you're on expands to cover the entire reel when it lands.

Other high paying symbols increase their win multiplier, up to 5x max, for each occurrence during that stage. In Insanity spins, expanded symbols also turn wild, massively increasing the win potential.

xBet Feature

That said, once you dig deeper beneath the expertly crafted veneer, there are clear flaws in the gameplay itself that prevent Rock Bottom attaining true greatness. Keith Gipson has designed far superior slots than this in the past.

As a pick-me-up to lift the spirits, playing Rock Bottom is about the polar opposite. But if you wish to submerge yourself into a cesspool of high volatility, creative features and psychological darkness, step right up!

Just don't expect to walk away in a cheerful mood or with bulging wallet in tow. Then again, that rather fits the overall theme...
